The Greengrass family had always supported the superiority of purebloods, even before the changes of the last few decades. Daphne’s grandfather was one of the original supporters of Voldemort, and the family reaped the benefits of that association in later years. Daphne’s grandparents were killed in what the family now calls a terrorist attack when Daphne was still quite young and her father, the only son, inherited the estate. Frederick Greengrass spent several years reorganizing the estate and family holdings with the end result that the family was making less money than it had under his father’s supervision. That, of course, was not the intent but poor Frederick just wasn’t very good at financial matters.

When Voldemort consolidated his control over the Ministry, however, Frederick Greengrass was persuaded (i.e. pushed by his wife) to serve in a minor ministry position, replacing a halfblood official. Cordelia Greengrass took over the running of the estate and family finances, and the family finances finally took a turn for the better. If anyone outside the family inquired, Mr. Greengrass still makes all the important decisions, but those who are well acquainted with the elder Greengrasses know who’s really in charge.

During the early years of her life, Daphne and her younger sister Astoria were mostly protected from the turmoil and violence of the times other than the loss of their grandparents which the girls didn’t really understand. They were given everything they wanted and then some. Their childhood friends were the other pureblood children of their social standing, and they attended all the best parties and social events. Cordelia Greengrass also did her best to teach her daughters about running an estate and investing money. Daphne, in particular, liked to play with the pretty gold though she was less interested in the work of balancing books and keeping figures.

At Hogwarts, Daphne was sorted into Slytherin, of course. It was her first exposure to halfbloods, but Daphne just did what everyone else did and looked down on them. She didn’t involve herself with tormenting them so much, mostly ignoring them. After all, the pureblood boys were so handsome and there were so many to enjoy….

Her mother had plans for marrying her off after Hogwarts, but Daphne was enjoying being single far too much to let that happen. For some reason, her mother kept coming up with potential mates that were far too controlling…and old. Daphne wasn’t about to curtail her fun for some old fogey who’d expect her to push out one brat after another. She whispered into Daddy’s ear and played one parent off the other as much as she could to prevent a marriage she didn’t want. Finally, her mother agreed to let her visit relatives in France, to ‘think about’ her future. The travel permits were not easy to obtain but Daphne pleaded most prettily to her father until he finally managed to acquire them. Daphne managed to stretch that visit out for nearly a year.

After receiving an astronomical bill from a high-end robemaker in Paris…and hearing rumors of a scandal involving the married son of a French Ministry official, Daphne’s mother put her foot down and both she and Frederick insisted that Daphne return home. Daphne maintained that she was innocent of any wrong-doing. Other than overspending, of course, but is that really so wrong?
